Contributing to the Library
Our Library is only as good as it is because of the donations made
by individual members. All donations are appreciated and welcomed.
The more books and other materials we have the better we can cater
for the needs of our members and their developing skills. We want
our library to be the best it can be.
Any magazines are welcome no matter how old as we do have gaps in
some of our collection. Your magazine may be the one we need. We
sometimes need to replace well used materials: your contribution may
help.
Please leave any contributions in the box for new materials to be
catalogued to be found near the Index Folders or ring Sandra Tarry
(9842 5324) to make special arrangements.
- History of
Woodcraft Manning ham’s Library
Up
to 2000
The library was a collection of magazines, a few books and two
videos donated by various members of the club. They were kept in a
cupboard in the corner of the work- room. All the magazines were
filed in a variety of boxes accessible for browsing but not as a
resource for ideas, skill development and knowledge for our members.
2000-2003
All the articles in the magazine collection were catalogued and
cross referenced according to the headings used today in the General
Index except for Scroll Sawing and Box Making which were added later
when these crafts were added to the skills being developed within
our club. It was an attempt to make our library a resource for all
our members. A colour scheme was devised so magazines of a specific
title could be quickly identified and found on our shelves in boxes
with same coloured labels and a numbering system (usually the issue
number and/or the date) added to find the specific magazine. The
index was produced in hard copy form and has been reprinted
annually.
2005
The Committee decided to get the library out of the cupboard and
give it a more appealing and permanent home. Robert McNamara built
and installed the attractive shelves we use today. Annual
subscriptions were made to three magazines to enhance the depth of
the library.
2006-present
Members have continued to donate books, audio-visual materials and
other magazines to the library as they realise how useful the
resource is. Specialist indexes were created for Carvers and Turners
so they could reduce the time taken to search for the material they
require. All the entries in the Carvers’ Index relate to Woodcarving
and likewise the entries in the Turners’ Index relate to
Woodturning. These are updated in hard copy form annually. Book and
Audio-visual collections expanded significantly owing to the
generosity of members.
2008
We entered the IT age. While the cataloguing continues as before and
the hard copy maintained, the General Index, Carvers’ Index and
Turner’s Index were installed on our website so members could do
their searching at home. Specialist indexes were also created for
Box Making and Scroll Sawing.
